Seoul, Korea (Mar 9, 2009) - LG Display (NYSE:LPL, KRX:034220), a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, today announced that it has commenced mass production of its 8th generation LCD plant in Paju, Korea on March 9, 2009.

The 8th generation LCD line will primarily manufacture 32-, 47- and 55- inch TV panels from its 2,200 X 2,500㎜ glass substrates. LG Display invested KRW2,535 billion in the line, excluding the building cost.

With initial monthly capacity of 20,000 input sheets of glass substrate, LG Display will adjust the ramp-up speed according to market circumstances and gradually increase monthly capacity to design capacity of 83,000 sheets by the end of the year.

The company expects to secure both productivity and profitability from the outset as the 8th generation LCD line was designed to remove wasteful factors, maximize investment efficiency and per capita productivity, and adopt multiple new technologies.

The start of mass production in the 8th generation plant will enable LG Display to actively respond to growing market demand further stimulated by narrowed price gap between LCD TV and CRT TV and the rapidly increasing Chinese market thanks to the Chinese government’s ‘Home Appliances to the Countryside’ policy.

According to market research firm DisplaySearch, fast-growing LCD TV market will reach 181 million units in 2011, up 35% from the 134 million units expected for this year.
