LG.Philips LCD wins display of the year gold award from society for information display/informatiion displayI magazine

2003-12-18

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 17, 2003 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd, one of the world's leading innovators of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, today announced that it has received the prestigious SID/Information Display Magazine 2003 Display of the Year Gold Award for its 20.1-inch UXGA LCD panel featuring copper-based interconnect technology. This accolade recognizes those in the international display industry responsible for designing and manufacturing displays for TVs, notebook PCs, desktop monitors, stadium displays, point-of-sale terminals, cell phones, PDAs and other electronic devices.

According to the SID/Information Display Magazine Display of the Year Awards Committee (DYAC), LG.Philips LCD was awarded the 2003 Display of the Year Gold Award for bringing to market a high-resolution LCD that introduces the third generation of LCD bus-line materials.

Traditionally, chromium and aluminum alloy interconnect process technologies have been the standard in the manufacture of TFT-LCDs. While copper-based technology promised to have a positive impact on display quality, there were underlying concerns surrounding device contamination and poor manufacturing infrastructures-preventing other companies from successfully leveraging it as an interconnect material. Combating these challenges head on, LG.Philips LCD has been actively researching this material for more than five years.

"We are extremely honored to have received this award," said Bruce Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD's executive vice president of marketing. "This achievement marks LG.Philips LCD's commitment to bring large, high-definition displays to market by leveraging state-of-the-art science, such as our copper bus technology."

The 20.1-inch UXGA LCD with copper bus lines can increase brightness of LCDs up to 35 percent, boasting a brightness of 250 nit, has a UXGA resolution of 1600 x 1200, a 25 dB flicker and an impressive 16.7 M colors. Moreover, this display reduces display jitter by about 40 percent and has a low power consumption of 30W. The result can be higher quality and even lighter weight displays for today's discerning customers. To date, LG.Philips LCD has obtained/applied for 97 patents (63 Korean patents, 34 overseas patents).

The Display of the Year Gold Award will be presented to key company officials during the upcoming SID 2004 conference, to be held May 23 - 28, 2004 in Seattle, Wash.
