SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 3 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., a
leading innovator in thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD)
technology, today announced that according to DisplaySearch, it has surpassed
the competition-becoming the world's leading TFT-LCD manufacturer in October.
According to The DisplaySearch Monitor (November 15, 2002), the company was
the number one large area* TFT-LCD supplier in October both on a unit basis
and revenue basis, and is expected to remain the leader throughout Q4 '02. In
addition, DisplaySearch reported that the company has maintained its
leadership position as the top TFT-LCD supplier in the desktop monitor space
for 12 of the last 13 quarters on a unit basis.
DisplaySearch also indicated that LG.Philips LCD shipped about 1.3 million
units in October, a 39 percent growth rate (month/month), compared to an
average of 20 percent by other suppliers. Furthermore, the company's ability
to rapidly ramp the second phase of its fifth-generation line, producing
cumulative yields as high as 88 percent, has made LG.Philips LCD number one in
TFT-LCD capacity, with a 19 percent share.
"We are extremely pleased to be the leading overall TFT-LCD supplier and
look forward to maintaining our leadership position in the desktop monitors,
15-inch notebook PCs and growing our position in the burgeoning LCD TV arena.
As part of this effort, we will complete phase two expansion of the world's
first fifth-generation TFT-LCD fab (''P4'') this year, and will begin mass
production in our next fifth-generation fab (''P5'') during the first half of
2003," noted Bon Joon Koo, chief executive officer for LG.Philips LCD.
