LG.Philips LCD creats a market for ultra-high resolution notebook PC displays

2001-01-14

LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. (CEO: Bon Joon Koo), today revealed that it has already begun mass production of a 15-inch UXGA TFT-LCD for notebook PCs. Until now, the ultra-high resolution format had been offered by only one second-tier producer, which inhibited growth of the high-performance portable market.

"Today''s chip and disk makers offer components that can put desktop performance on the road. LG.Philips LCD is proud to support their efforts by creating a de facto standard for high-performance portable displays", explained Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

As 15" LCD monitors become commonplace, more notebooks will be built from this common size, promoting a shift from the mass market 12" & 14"displays today to the 13" and 15" division that is inevitable in the future. As 15" becomes the standard business laptop in the future, there will be need for product segmentation and a premium space. This new 15" UXGA (1600x1200) high resolution display is perfect to help build the high performance notebook category.

The LP150U1 15.0-inch TFT module gives notebook users over 40% more pixels than conventional portable PC (XGA) displays provide. Increased use of digital photography, multimedia presentations, digital imaging and complex spreadsheets in business make the 1600x1200 pixel format useful for everyday tasks. Notebook computers equipped with such displays sometime make a second desktop computer unnecessary for today''s mobile professional. At present, conventional XGA-grade TFT-LCDs comprise nearly 75 percent of the total notebook PC display market, while higher resolution modules constitute less than three percent. According to market research firm DisplaySearch (Austin, Texas), a UXGA notebook PC market will materialize during the second half of this year due to dual-source availability of 15-inch modules.

The UXGA notebook PC display category is expected to capture approximately 7.6 percent (615,000 units) of the total notebook PC market by year 2002. Recent reports from International Data (IDC, Framingham, Massachusetts) show that the portable computer market has been growing much faster than the desktop segment in both units and revenues. This trend indicates that businesses are willing to pay a little more for the convenience of a single product solution. Leading notebook PC makers have begun offering a range of high-performance platforms to support their customers'' need for conducting business around the clock and around the world.

According to Berkoff, the commitment to quality, customers, and technology leadership has helped earn our company the number one position in the mainstream TFT-LCD monitor market for four consecutive quarters. LG.Philips LCD hopes to leverage this strategy to capture a top share of the emerging UXGA-grade notebook PC market, which poses significant growth opportunity for the company. "We see tremendous opportunities in this emerging market, which is being fueled by demand for notebooks that offer higher resolution and performance. LG.Philips LCD is committed to playing a leading role in the production of quality TFT-LCDs for the burgeoning UXGA category as it goes mainstream." noted Berkoff.
