LG.Philips LCD breaks industry and company record by selling more than

2001-01-14

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, December 11, 2000 -Shattering its past company record and an industry record as well, LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. today announced it has sold over one million of one of the company`s products within a calendar year. In fact, it sold one million 15.1-inch TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) units within a ten-month period from January to October. This industry milestone was reached nearly three times faster than the previous record set by the company`s one million units sold in 28 months from December 1997 to March 2000 and is further evidence that 15.x-inch modules are quickly becoming the standard size for consumers and businesses wanting a low power, lightweight and thin desktop monitor solution. In continuing support of this trend, LG.Philips LCD expects sales of its accumulated 15.1-inch module, which was introduced in December 1997, to total more than two million units by the end of the year.

With its actual screen size equivalent to a 17-inch CRT desktop monitor, the 15.1-inch TFT-LCD consumes less power, has lower electro-magnetic emissions, is extremely lightweight and is significantly thinner (1/5 or less than the thickness of traditional CRT monitors). These advantages have made 15.1-inch TFT-LCDs attractive to both companies building LCDs and the end user, resulting in 15.x-inch TFT-LCDs holding a 76 percent share of the overall TFT-LCD monitor module market, according to LCD market research firm DisplaySearch (Austin, Texas).

Commenting on LG.Philips LCD`s record sales, Ross Young, DisplaySearch founder and president, said, one million single modules sold in such a short time is extremely impressive and shows the strong leadership role LG.Philips LCD will play as the TFT-LCD market grows dramatically over the next few years. This announcement is further testament that 15.x-inch size modules are standarnd should continue to be the popular TFT-LCD choice for desktop monitor applications. We see this market exceeding that of notebook PCs before 2005. This projected market growth, combined with LG.Philips LCD`s best-in-class display solutions, has positioned them to gain even more ground in the large-area TFT-LCD market.

DisplaySearch`s most recent data shows LG.Philips LCD is the undisputed leader of the 15.1-inch TFT-LCD for monitors market with 26 percent unit share; in the overall large-area TFT-LCD market, the company`s unit market share rose in Q3 from 13.9 percent to 14.9 percent on 23 percent sequential quarter growth and 30 percent year-to-year growth.

Bruce Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD`s executive vice president of marketing, noted, while many of our competitors are still focusing on smaller TFT-LCD production, we have worked hard to also offer what an increasing number of customers are demanding now 15.1-inch modules. This tenacity and commitment to our customers has made the sale of one million 15.1-inch units possible in less than a year. While LG.Philips LCD will continue to focus on the 15.1-inch product class, of course, we will also work on expanding the market for large-size monitor modules such as our high resolution 15.7-inch, 18-inch and 20-inch products.

In addition to being the world`s leading supplier of 15.x-inch and 13.3-inch TFT-LCDs, LG.Philips LCD also currently boasts the world`s largest production capacity for large-sized TFT-LCDs, ranging from 18 inches and above. LG.Philips LCD recently announced plans for its fourth plant (P4) in Kumi, South Korea, which will target the production of larger-sized, high-value products such as the 18-inch, 20-inch and larger TFT-LCDs for desktop monitors and LCD TV applications. Last July, the company also unveiled its 20.1-inch UXGA (1600x1200) LCD display, which was developed in response to the current market trend toward higher resolution and larger screen size. LG.Philips LCD`s 20.1-inch UXGA display will be suitable for wall-mounted LCD monitors and high-resolution TV applications. All of these developments signal LG.Philips LCD`s continuous push to further position itself as an undisputed leader in the TFT-LCD industry.
