LG.Philips LCD leads in fastest growing segment of TFT-LCD market for forth consecutive quarter
2001-01-14
LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. (CEO: Bon Joon Koo), one of the world''s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today announced that for the fourth consecutive quarter (every quarter since its inception), the company has maintained its position as the number one supplier of 15.x-inch monitors-the fastest growing segment within the mainstream TFT-LCD market.
According to the Q3''00 Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report released by DisplaySearch (Austin, Texas), 15.x-inch monitor modules continued to dominate the TFT-LCD monitor market. Specifically, second quarter shipments increased 16.3 percent over the first quarter, or 80 percent year over year, and comprised 1.25 million units, or 75 percent of the total TFT-LCD monitor market, which shipped close to 1.67 million units during Q2. LG.Philips LCD remains the undisputed leader in the 15.x-inch arena, shipping more than 250,000 units during Q2-boosting the company''s market share of this size monitor module to approximately 20 percent.
Commenting on LG.Philips LCD''s record quarter, Ross Young, DisplaySearch founder and president, said, "We continue to be impressed with LG.Philips LCD''s dramatic growth since its inception just over a year ago, and its rise to become one of the industry''s strongest players. For the fourth consecutive quarter, the company has maintained its market leadership edge in the mainstream monitor market with its 15.x-inch TFT-LCD modules, and in the 13.3-inch notebook module market as well. With such solid performance and industry-proven ability to deliver best-in-class display solutions, coupled with the company''s extensive product portfolio and manufacturing capacity muscle, LG.Philips LCD is well positioned to extend its stronghold in the large-area TFT-LCD market."
Bruce Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD''s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, noted, "We''re pleased that our hard work has yielded LG.Philips LCD a leading position within the TFT-LCD industry. While our extraordinary growth over the last year was largely driven by strong market demand in the monitor and notebook areas, it is the company''s technology and quick-to-market product offerings, along with our commitment to our customers and our quality that has earned us a leading position in today''s large-area TFT-LCD market."
LG.Philips LCD''s 15.1-inch TFT-LCD is a mainstream model in the LCD monitor market. The advantage of a 15.1-inch TFT-LCD for use in desktop monitor applications is that its actual screen size is equivalent to that of a 17-inch CRT monitor, but it consumes less power, has lower electro magnetic emissions, is extremely lightweight and is significantly thinner (1/5 or less than the thickness of traditional CRT monitors).
In addition to being the world''s leading supplier of 15.x-inch and 13.3-inch TFT-LCDs, LG.Philips LCD also currently boasts the world''s largest production capacity for large-sized TFT-LCDs ranging from 18 inches and above. LG.Philips LCD recently announced plans for its fourth plant (P4) in Kumi, South Korea, which will target the production of larger-sized, high-value products such as the 18-inch, 20-inch and larger TFT-LCDs for desktop monitors and LCD TV screens. Last July, the company also unveiled its 20.1-inch UXGA (1600x1200) LCD display, which was developed in response to the current market trend toward higher resolution and larger screen size. LG.Philips LCD''s 20.1-inch UXGA display will be suitable for wall-mounted LCD monitors and high-resolution TV applications. All of these developments signal LG.Philips LCD''s continuous push to further position itself as an undisputed leader in the TFT-LCD industry.
