LG.Philips LCD Exceeds a Million 15.1-Inch TFT-LCDs For Monitors

2001-01-14

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, MARCH 29, 2000 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. , one of the world`s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, announced that sales of the company`s 15.1-inch TFT-LCDs for use in desktop monitor applications have exceeded one million units in March of this year. This major corporate milestone is valued at approximately $550 million U.S., and marks the first time within the industry that a display company has sold more than one million units for a single TFT-LCD product. This significant sales record was achieved within only 28 months from when production of the first 15.1-inch panel began at LG.Philips LCD in late 1997.

The 15.1-inch TFT-LCD is now a mainstream model in the LCD monitor market, with a combined market share of 75 percent. The advantage of a 15.1-inch TFT-LCD for use in desktop monitor applications is that its actual screen size is equivalent to that of the 17-inch CRT monitor, but consumes less power, has lower electro-magnetic emissions, is extremely lightweight, and is significantly thinner (1/5 or less the thickness of traditional CRT monitors).

"This sales record is driving LG.Philips LCD`s position as the world`s leading TFT-LCD supplier for the desktop monitor market. Last year LG.Philips LCD achieved a 27 percent market share among 15.1-inch TFT-LCDs for monitor-use to assert its market leadership,"said Bon Joon Koo, CEO of LG.Philips LCD. "Ultimately driven by a strong market demand, the main factors fueling LG.Philips LCD`s growth in market share can be attributed to the company`s reliable and stable productivity and capacity strengths, along with its excellence in quality and worldwide presence and customer support capabilities," he added.

Aside from being the leading supplier of 15.1-inch TFT-LCDs, LG.Philips LCD also boasts the world`s largest production capacity for large-sized TFT-LCDs ranging from 18-inches and above. Within this year, LG.Philips LCD is slated to complete construction of its third fab in Kumi, which will target the production of larger-sized, high-value products such as the 18-inch, 20-inch and 22-inch TFT-LCDs. All of these efforts signal LG.Philips LCDs continuous push to further position itself as an undisputed leader in the TFT-LCD industry, with a year 2000 revenue goal of about $2.5 billion (U.S.) in total sales and a market share objective of 22 percent.
