LG.Philips LCD Develops First 15.7-inch LCD For Monitor Use
2001-01-14
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, APRIL 19, 2000 ?LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. , one of the world`s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, announced that it has developed the industry`s first 15.7-inch SXGA-LCD display for use in desktop monitor applications. This new display is comparable in price to that of a 15-inch XGA-LCD module and features the resolution capabilities of a 17-inch SXGA-LCD. Volume production of this new 15.7-inch LCD is slated to begin during May of this year.
According to representatives of LG.Philips LCD, the high-resolution, 15.7-inch LCD was developed to address the needs of today`s stringent e-business environments, which include multi-tasking, full-motion video and multimedia games. Offering SXGA resolution, this new display will be used for high-performance desktop monitor applications. Although the 15-inch XGA-LCD has a leading place in the monitor market - occupying a 75 percent share of the world market - increased demand among customers for larger screens and clearer video quality has fueled the growth of larger-scale LCD monitors.
The ability to cost-effectively develop a larger screen size has been a major challenge for display manufacturers, until now. Currently, a 17-inch LCD monitor costs approximately $2,000-$2,500, while a 15-inch LCD monitor is priced around $1,000 or less. LG.Philips LCD`s new 15.7-inch LCD module is close in price to a 15-inch LCD, while addressing the demand for a larger screen and increased pixel count for enhanced viewing quality and resolution.
As a result, LG.Philips LCD`s new 15.7-inch SXGA-LCD will provide customers, who are not quite satisfied with current 15-inch and 17-inch LCD displays due to their size and price, respectively, with another solution that better addresses their monitor needs. Testament to this success, LG.Philips LCD`s new 15.7-inch display has received significant interest from several leading monitor companies within the U.S., Taiwan and Japan.
The development of the 15.7-inch LCD was intended to provide three key advantages for customers - larger screen size, superior video quality and a lower price point. Another benefit of this product is that it features a side-mounting capability. Utilizing an advanced and patented "Side-Mounting Technology" developed by LG.Philips LCD, screws are applied to the side, not to the front (front-mounting type), to mount the LCD inside a monitor. This provides a slimmer form factor for the user with less depth, and, in fact, a narrower "edge," as no space is needed for screws or holes. Monitor manufacturers can thus produce an extremely compact and slim product through this revolutionary capability, having a competitive edge in design.
According to Hyoung Youn, LG.Philips LCD`s vice president of Product Strategy, "17-inch CRT`s are currently the most popular display in the world, with SXGA comprising more than 50 percent. We see great opportunity for our new flat TFT-LCD display for similar reasons, since it has about the same display area in a smaller, lighter, lower power device and does not cause flicker-induced eyestrain." Youn anticipates that the 15.7-inch SXGA will also be a leading product of LCD monitors, and ideal for all PC users.
LG.Philips LCD has already shipped more than one million 15.1-inch LCD units for use in desktop monitor applications, ranking top in this category with a market share of 25 percent. Through its availability in volume, larger screen, higher resolution and low price, the 15.7-inch SXGA-LCD is expected to increase LG.Philips LCD`s market share over the next year.
