Producing the World’s First 22-inch TFT-LCDs

LG.Philips LCD is leading the world’s standard in the TFT-LCD market. LG.Philips LCD has recently developed and started producing the first high resolution 22 inch wide TFT-LCD for digital TV. Thus, LG.Philips LCD will take the initiative to dominate the market in the 22 inch wide TFT-LCD after having 50% of the world market share with the world’s first 18.1 inch products. In the TFT-LCD market, the leading company sets the new size as a standard following the standard by other companies. The newly developed 22 inch TFT-LCD is the largest product in size, which costs more than $3,000 per unit. Especially, this new product provides a clean resolution (SXGAW; 1600x1024) for Digital TV (HDTV) with a wide type having a length to height ratio, 16:10 and its width is only 3.5 cm, a tenth of a common monitor (Length: 54.2 cm, Height: 37.5 cm, Weight: 5kg). It has many applications in the areas of CAD/CAM, computer graphic and design, and finance. In addition, it is possible to work on a multi-tasking job with two A4 size graphics at the same monitor. It has a capacity to transfer 2.1 times data compared to the existing XGA (1024x768) with implementing 1,600 colors. It has a feature to view in an angle of 160 degree from each side. LG.Philips LCD plan to export the products to the North America at the end of September. LG.Philips LCD have succeeded in developing the product with 40 researchers and 5 billion won of development expenses for a year. Last year, LG.Philips LCD have developed the first 18.1-inch thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) in the world and has set the standard in the industry. The world’s TFT-LCD market is fast growing in this year, especially the TFT-LCD monitors market, which grew 2.5 times higher than last year, amounting up to 4 million units. Meanwhile, LG.Philips LCD will lead the market of large 22-inch products after 18.1-inch TFT-LCD including the high value TFT-LCD niche market for aviation and medical purposes.
