LG Display’s Contribution to 3D TV Recognized with Award in China

2015-03-27

Success to Drive Greater Expansion into the Global Market

LG Display Co., Ltd., a leading innovator of TFT-LCD technology, was recognized for expanding China’s 3D TV market with its consumer-friendly Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology by winning the “2011 3D Market Excellent Performance Award” at the China Digital TV Industry Development Forum.

Hosted by the China Electronic Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Ministry of Information Industry, the Forum praised LG Display’s FPR for significantly advancing the 3D TV market.

“Making 3D TVs more approachable and user-friendly for consumers has been key to the success of our FPR 3D panels in China,” said President and CEO of LG Display Mr. Young Soo Kwon. “Riding this momentum, we plan to take an indisputable leadership position in the global market as we bring the 3D experience to more TV viewers.”

Buoyed by the success in the Chinese market, LG Display’s FPR 3D panel global shipments reached 1 million units in late April before exceeding the 2.5-million mark in late June.

Since the full-scale launch of FPR 3D TVs by China’s local TV makers and LG Electronics last December and early this year, 3D TV sales rose sharply to account for over 10 percent of the total LCD TV market in China in June, from only 1 to 2 percent early this year, according to market research firm All View Consulting (AVC).

Sparking consumer interest, the company has enjoyed a sharp increase in FPR sales within a short period of time. FPR outperformed Shutter Glass (SG) 3D technology in terms of monthly market share for the first time in June to claim a more than 50-percent share, up from 5 percent following its debut in January according to All View Consulting (AVC). The FPR method has since continued to solidify its position as the representative 3D technology in the important Chinese TV market.

In a variety of tests conducted by twenty display experts for the Chinese Display Association in April 2011, FPR outscored SG in eight out of ten categories, including convenience and comfort of glasses, brightness, wider viewing angles and superiority in eliminating flicker and dizziness.
