LG Display to Promote FPR 3D Technology in Europe during IFA 2011

2015-03-27

Aims for 50% Market Share in Europe to Accelerate Global 3D TV Market Growth

LG Display, a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, is showcasing its Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D panel technology during this year’s IFA 2011 in Berlin, Germany, as a launching pad for expanding the 3D TV market in Europe by highlighting the benefits of FPR technology for both retailers and consumers.

Together with its partners and retailers in Europe, LG Display will utilize this year’s event to build on the positive reception FPR 3D technology has received since launching in Europe in May and cement FPR’s position as the mainstream 3D TV technology in Europe.

“We are confident that FPR 3D technology will rapidly expand the global 3D market by attracting European consumers and retailers with its practical values, thereby becoming the mainstream technology for the 3D market,” said President and CEO of LG Display Mr. Young Soo Kwon. “Building on the global success of LG Display’s FPR technology, we aim to capture 50 percent of 3D TV market in Europe by the end of this year”

FPR 3D technology has steadily increased its global market presence since FPR 3D TVs were introduced in December 2010. FPR now accounts for almost 60 percent of 3D TV sales in China and, as of the first week of August, has quickly secured 28 percent in the U.S. according to All View Consulting and NPD Weekly, respectively. Moreover, the momentum created by the introduction of FPR 3D in China has seen the 3D TV market jump from 1 percent to 15 percent of the entire flat TV market in China.

Improving the 3D TV Experience for Consumers

FPR 3D technology offers clear health benefits over Shutter Glass (SG) 3D technology such as eliminating the main causes of headaches and dizziness – flicker and crosstalk – while offering a FULL HD viewing environment with higher brightness and a higher refresh rate than SG 3D.

The FPR 3D glasses, which weigh the same as standard glasses, are significantly lighter than SG 3D glasses which require batteries. The curved lenses of FPR glasses also prevent image distortion around the lens’ edge by concentrating light at a single focal point.

At around 5 euro a pair, FPR’s glasses are far less expensive than SG’s which retail for approximately 100 euro, ensuring households can keep many pairs and users can have their own glasses to suit individual needs, from smaller sizes for children to clip-on options for glasses wearers and even stylish designs for the fashion conscious.

Making 3D TV Sales Easier for Retailers

By eliminating common complaints about 3D from many retailers, FPR 3D TVs are poised to be far more convenient from a retail point of view and contribute to increased 3D TV sales. FPR solves such issues as the inefficient use of time caused by recharging batteries for SG glasses and the additional costs associated with increased security for preventing the loss or theft of the expensive SG glasses.

Another strong selling point for retailers is that FPR glasses are compatible with 3D-enabled TVs, monitors and notebooks from a range of manufacturers, including LG Electronics, Philips, Toshiba and Vizio, offering more flexibility and compatibility on the sales floor.

LG Display plans to strengthen marketing in Europe by giving consumers more opportunities to directly compare FPR 3D technology and experience its superiority over the existing SG type 3D TV technology.
