LG.Philips LCD’s Module Plant in Poland Begins Mass Production
2007-04-01
Seoul, Korea (April 1, 2007) - LG.Philips LCD [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced today that it began full-scale mass production at its back-end LCD module plant in Poland on March 30, 2007.
LG.Philips LCD’s module plant is located in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw in southwestern Poland, and will produce LCD modules mainly for 32-inch and larger LCD TVs. The company plans to expand the annual production capacity of the plant from initial 3 million units to 11 million units by 2011.
Starting mass production in Poland will help LG.Philips LCD continue building lasting strategic alliances with client and partner firms operating or building factories near its new module plant. In addition, with major partners producing components and materials for LCD modules nearby, LG.Philips LCD’s module plant is expected to be a critical part of a highly efficient local production system for LCD products.
Many of LG.Philips LCD’s customers and partner firms have already built or are building facilities in the region. LG Electronics currently operates an LCD TV plant nearby and Toshiba, which has a 19.9 percent equity stake in LG.Philips LCD’s Poland plant, is constructing an LCD TV plant in the vicinity, with production scheduled to start in August 2007. Moreover, Philips and Matsushita have TV plants in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
“The start of mass production and the establishment of a base in Poland have enabled LG.Philips LCD to secure a strong foundation for mutual growth with our customers in the fast-growing European LCD TV market,” said Young Soo Kwon, President & CEO of LG.Philips LCD. “We were able to move quickly to meet our customers’ needs in Europe, opening this plant only nine months after construction began. Through local production we plan to provide services tailored to the needs of our customers, offering a timely and stable supply of optimized products and services.”
To better provide service aligned with the needs of its customers around the world, LG.Philips LCD undertook a strategy to build an optimized global production network. In the first phase of the strategy, the company began mass production at its module plant in Nanjing, China, in May 2003. This was followed by the start of operations at the module plant in Poland.
What is a module production line?
The TFT-LCD process is comprised of the front-end panel manufacturing process which involves TFTs, color filters, cells and the back-end modularization process. Panels are equipped with backlights, polarized light film, driver ICs, cases, and other basic components and assembled into modules. The modules are then sold to TV or PC manufacturers for use in the production of LCD TVs, monitors, and notebook PCs before being delivered to end users.
European LCD TV Market
According to a DisplaySearch report released in March, 2007, Europe showed the largest demand for LCD TVs in 2006, accounting for a 39.3 percent share of the worldwide LCD TV market on a unit basis. The market is projected to grow to 35.8 million units by 2010.
