2004-12-27
SEOUL, Korea (14 December, 2004) - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., one of the world's leading innovators of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, today announced it is extending its penetration into both the Chinese and worldwide markets by increasing module production in China.
On 14 December, 2004, LG.Philips LCD held the opening ceremony of 'N2,' its second Nanjing module factory. This event was attended by LG.Philips LCD CEO Bon-Joon Koo, employees and senior government officials of Nanjing City. The ceremony took place at LG.Philips LCD's Nanjing factory, which is located in the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone (NETDZ) of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing City.
LG.Philips LCD, the first Korean LCD panel maker to move into China with module production, began construction of its Nanjing factory in August 2002. In May of the following year, production began at 'N1,' the first Nanjing module factory.
The 'N2' factory, for which the opening ceremony was held earlier today, has been under construction since December 2003 and began ramping-up from October this year.
LG.Philips LCD began ramping-up at the Nanjing module facility in May 2003. Through successful ramp-up, 'N1' and 'N2' achieved monthly production capacity of one million units in October 2004, and are expected to reach accumulated output of 10 million units by the end of this year. This rapid growth, which sets an industry milestone, demonstrates that LG.Philips LCD possesses a leading capability in manufacturing technology.
According to DisplaySearch ("DisplaySearch Monitor" newsletter, November 2004), LG.Philips LCD recovered its number one 'large-area' position in November 2004. The Nanjing factories' increased production capacity contributed to LG.Philips LCD recovering its number one 'large-area' position by reaching monthly sales of over 2.7 million 'large' LCD units in October 2004, and monthly sales of more than 3 million 'large' units in November 2004, a new record.
In his opening speech, LG.Philips LCD CEO Bon-Joon Koo commented on the successful ongoing ramp-up at the Nanjing factory, congratulating the hard-working teams that made it possible. He also expressed his vision for developing the Nanjing module factory into a global operation base for future growth.
