LG.Philips LCD sets new TFT-LCD industry production and shipment record

2003-10-20

SEOUL, South Korea, Oct. 1, 2003 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd, one of the world's leading innovators of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, today announced that it has reached a major milestone with a new monthly production and shipment record of two-million "large" TFT-LCDs (10-inches and above), according to DisplaySearch and other industry analysts.

LG.Philips LCD attributes this success to the company's strong marketing and sales capabilities, as well as its superior manufacturing productivity, as indicated by the company's record-setting early ramp-up and operation of its two fifth-generation production lines "P4, "the world''s first Gen. 5 factory, which began production in spring 2002, and "P5," the world''s third Gen. 5 factory, which began ramping in March 2003. Through early stabilization of its fifth-generation operations, the company was able to achieve more than 80 percent production yield rates-allowing this shipment and production milestone to set another industry record.

"LG.Philips LCD has been the number one supplier of large TFT-LCDs for three quarters in a row and we now expect the company to remain number one for a fourth consecutive quarter (Q3 `03) on a unit basis. Their previous record-setting, speedy ramp-up of the world''s first and third fifth-generation factories certainly helped them to grow more quickly than most of their competitors this past year. LG.Philips LCD''s new milestone is testament to the company''s production leadership, and we congratulate them on this achievement," noted Ross Young, president of DisplaySearch.
