LG.Philips LCD Begins Shipping Large & Wide-Format TFT-LCDs for HDTVs
2002-06-11
SEOUL, South Korea, May 20, 2002-LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., a leading innovator of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today announced it has begun mass production and shipment of its wide-format 30W ("W" for 16:10 or 16:9 wide-aspect ratio displays) thin film transistor (TFT)-LCDs. Created in an effort to meet OEM demands for standardized LCD sizes for today's high-definition televisions (HDTVs), this pivotal 30W LCD will ship to many leading television manufacturers for incorporation into HDTVs scheduled to hit the market later this year.
According to Bruce Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD's executive vice president of marketing, LG.Philips LCD, "LCD TVs are brighter, slimmer, lighter and use less power than traditional CRT offerings or PDPs, and will revolutionize home entertainment, as well as furniture in our homes. This is the beginning of the end for the big armoire that holds the TV. No longer will consumers be confined with bulky and heavy televisions that weigh heavily on the electricity bills and their back muscles - rather they can enjoy added space savings, revel in its sleek and stylish form factor, while experiencing entertainment that rivals the silver screen," noted Berkoff.
LG.Philips LCD's 30W boasts an impressively wide viewing angle of 176 degrees, brightness of 450 cd/m2 and WXGA resolution of 1280 x 768, or over 2.9 mega pixels. In addition to its large screen size and slim form factor (50.9 mm), this display also offers a high contrast ratio (400:1) and aspect ratio of 16:9.6. It weighs only 6.4 kg and can be easily hung on any wall.
LG.Philips LCD will be demonstrating the 30W, along with other best-in-class TFT-LCDs for desktop monitor, notebook PC and television applications, during the 2002 Society for Information Display Symposium (SID), May 19-24, at the Hynes Convention Center, Boston, Mass.
