LG.Philips LCD Unleashes World's Largest TFT-LCD For High-Definition Television Applications

2001-07-28

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, January 6, 2001-Strengthening its role as a leading provider of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology to the large screen monitor and television market, LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd, (CEO: Bon Joon Koo), today introduced the world''s largest TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) for high-definition televisions (HDTVs). Offering superior resolution and clarity, LG.Philips LCD''s 29-inch diagonal display features a wide format viewable area of 26.97-inches x 16.54-inches (685 mm x 420 mm) with an extremely slim (1.77-inches or 45 mm), compact design-making it ideal for both wall mounted and table-top wide-screen televisions. With this new 29-inch display, LG.Philips LCD now offers the widest range of TFT-LCDs available for television applications, including 15.1-inch, 20.1-inch and 22-inch displays.

Until now, there have been no large-area TFT-LCDs for HDTVs that were able to offer the same brightness (500 nits) or fast response time (15 microseconds) as that of the thicker and heavier CRT monitor. Not only does LG.Philips LCD''s 29-inch display deliver a better response time than smaller, competitive offerings; but it also offers higher resolution, more brightness and provides better clarity by removing the color-spreading phenomenon usually associated with moving pictures.

According to Bruce Berkoff, LG. Philips LCD''s executive vice president of marketing, the 29-inch TFT-LCD''s brightness and fast response time will help put the "high definition" in HDTVs of the future. "The high resolution and clarity provided by our 29-inch wide display makes it an ideal choice for manufacturers building the larger screen, higher performance HDTVs customers are demanding," noted Berkoff. "LG.Philips LCD is committed to continuing the development of these large-area TFT-LCDs to support the aggressive growth of the LCD television market of the future."

Commenting on the explosive growth expected for the LCD TV market, DisplaySearch (Austin, Texas), one of today''s leading display market research firms, noted that the overall TV market is expected to grow from 142-million units in 2000 to 150-million units in 2001 and 158-million untis in 2002. "TFT-LCDs are the preferred solution for the television market. As a result, the TFT-LCD market will see tremendous growth. Currently LCD TVs occupy approximately 0.12 percent of the market, but we expect this segment to increase approximately 100 percent every year through 2005. This projected market growth, combined with LG.Philips LCD''s best-in-class display solutions and large area manufacturing capabilities, positions them well to gain further market share in the LCD TV space," noted Barry Young, DisplaySearch''s vice president.

In addition to the large screen size, slimness and fast response time of LG.Philips LCD''s 29-inch display, this display also offers a high contrast ratio of 400:1 and an aspect ration of 16:9. Additional advantages afforded by the 29-inch display include a viewing angle of 170/170 and brightness of 450 cd/㎡.

In addition to offering the world''s largest TFT-LCD available for the HDTV market, LG.Philips LCD is also the world''s leading supplier of 15.1-inch and 13.3-inch TFT-LCD modules and currently boasts the largest production capacity for large-sized TFT-LCDs (18 inches and above). LG.Philips LCD recently announced plans for its fourth plant (P4) in Kumi, South Korea, which will target the production of larger-sized, high-value products such as the18-inch, 20-inch and larger TFT-LCDs for desktop monitors and LCD TV screens
