LG.Philips LCD Maintains Leadership in TFT-LCD Monitor Market for Sixth Straight Quarter

2001-05-26

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, April 4 ,2001 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today announced that it has retained its top leadership position within the TFT(thin film transistor)-LCD monitor market for the sixth straight quarter and second consecutive year. Along with this distinction, LG.Philips LCD now ranks number two among TFT-LCD manufacturers in customer satisfaction, according to a new customer satisfaction survey conducted by market research firm DisplaySearch (Austin, Texas).

The latest Large-Area TFT-LCD Shipment Report Q1 `01 released by DisplaySearch indicates that LG.Philips LCD led the LCD monitor market for the sixth consecutive quarter and second consecutive year, with shipments of its modules ranging from 13.3-inch to 20.1-inch commanding a 17.4 percent share of the overall monitor market for 2000, up from 15 percent in 1999. DisplaySearch also reports that LG.Philips LCD maintained its number two position in the notebook PC arena for the year, with an overall market share of 13.6 percent. For the year, LG.Philips LCD witnessed 21 percent growth across all its markets, enabling it to secure its position as the world`s second-largest TFT-LCD manufacturer in 2000 with 4.3 million units sold, equating to a 14 percent total market share.

Additionally, LG.Philips LCD ranked as the number two TFT-LCD supplier for customer satisfaction, according to DisplaySearch`s Customer Satisfaction Survey. The purpose of the survey was to recognize top-performing companies, to establish a benchmarking process by which LCD customers and suppliers could more effectively assess their relationships, and allow system manufacturers to better understand how the industry perceives its supply base. Specifically, one segment of DisplaySearch’s three-pronged survey examined notebook computer and flat-panel monitor producers’ ratings of TFT-LCD suppliers’ performance.

In conducting the survey, DisplaySearch received input from 22 notebook and desktop monitor companies, which rated the performance of 18 TFT-LCD suppliers, including LG.Philips LCD, based on the following categories: quality, technology, logistics, commercial terms, and service and support. While findings showed that LG.Philips LCD surpassed 16 other TFT-LCD manufacturers to place second in overall customer satisfaction, a more in-depth analysis of the individual ranking categories revealed that LG.Philips LCD was number one in service and support.

According to DisplaySearch’s Vice President Mark Fihn, "The DisplaySearch Customer Satisfaction Survey provides a valuable benchmarking tool by which TFT-LCD suppliers can see how their respective customers perceive them. Furthermore, it allows today`s notebook and desktop monitor producers to easily identify best-of-breed suppliers. LG.Philips LCD’s ability to debut at number two on the list is testament to its success in delivering customer satisfaction on a number of critical fronts-especially when it comes to service and support, where they faired the highest over these 17 other participating companies."

Commenting on the company’s achievements, Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president of marketing, for LG.Philips LCD, noted, "Close relationships with our customers are vital to our success, and the results of the DisplaySearch survey bear this out. It’s our continuous commitment that has enabled us once again to attain the leadership position within the monitor module market, the number one position in service and support, as well as the number two position within the industry overall. This year, we will continue to deliver high-quality, extremely reliable TFT-LCD products that offer superior performance, as well as provide the unparalleled customer service and support that sets us apart from other suppliers."
