LG Display Aims To Strenghen Global 3D Leadership In 2012 Based On Successful Experience In China
2015-03-27
LG Display, a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, unveiled its goal for 2012 to strengthen its leadership in the global 3D display market while celebrating a successful first year of its Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology in Beijing, China on Dec. 15.
FPR, the next-generation 3D technology, addresses most of consumer concerns about 3D, such as flickering images and consequent dizziness, thereby significantly opening the door for global 3D TV market growth. According to DisplaySearch, the global 3D TV market is expected to grow to 18 million units by the end of 2011, which is 10 times bigger than the amount in 2010.
“FPR serves as a real breakthrough in the 3D market, usher in an era of 3D. The Chinese market in particular has been instrumental in expanding the 3D TV market, and our expertise in 3D has been behind this success,” said Executive Vice President and incoming CEO of LG Display Mr. Sang Beom Han. “Next year will be more significant for FPR as we are aiming to further strengthen our global leadership in 3D displays utilizing our successful experience in China.”
In China, FPR has achieved an overwhelming market share of 50% during only the 4 months after its launch according to AVC (All View Consulting – a Chinese market research institute). Its technical superiority, the company’s localized strategies and close cooperation with local TV makers, such as Skyworth and Konka, resulted in winning Chinese consumers in such a short period.
According to DisplaySearch, the Chinese 3D TV market is expected to grow to 5 million units by the end of 2011 – a 40 fold increase compared to last year. This makes China the largest 3D TV market in the world.
FPR’s superiority has been globally recognized by various specialists, consumer reviews and reports. For example, Consumer Reports, one of the most reputable consumer magazines in the U.S., ranked FPR as no.1 by a clear margin in its 3D TV comparison evaluation.
