LG Display Co., Ltd., a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, today announced that it will participate in the United Nations Environment Program’s (UNEP) ‘Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign’ with its customer companies to contribute to protecting the environment.
On June 7, LG Display signed an agreement to participate in the ‘Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign’ with UNEP and decided to build a USD 1 million green fund in connection with the campaign. Accordingly, the company supports NGOs in efforts to plant trees in regions that need a forestation through October together with Dell, Lenovo, Acer and LG Electronics which are major customers for its LCD monitor panels.
Recently, LG Display has been moving to expand sales of LCD monitor panels that employ LED backlight, an environmentally friendly component. LG Display decided to take part in the Billion Tree Campaign to convey the message to consumers that products made with eco-friendly parts contribute greatly to protecting the environment.
Mr. Achim Steiner, UNEP’s Executive Director, noted “Planting trees touches an action-orientated nerve in each one of us and connects us to the natural world. The act of planting gives expression to concerns about environmental degradation and how we can help pave the way for long term sustainability. It is a way of companies signaling they wish to be part of the sustainability solution, which is also about creating a shift from short-term profit to long-term value creation.”
Mr. Hyunhwoi Ha, LG Display’s Executive Vice President and Head of IT Business Unit said, “It is very meaningful to have opportunity to participate in a campaign to improve the environment. LG Display will continue to utilize environmentally friendly components and produce green products to play a leading role in protecting our planet.”
