LG Display Begins Installation of Equipments for its New LTPS Line

2009-08-12

Seoul, Korea (August 12, 2009) ? LG Display Co., Ltd. [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, has begun installation of equipments at its new LTPS production line to target the high-end display market for mobile applications.

On August 12, LG Display held a ceremony to mark the beginning of equipment installation for its new LTPS(Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) facility.

The company plans to invest a total of KRW577.1 billion, excluding building costs, into the new 4th generation LTPS line (730 x 920mm glass substrate) with a monthly capacity of 20,000 input sheets of glass substrate. The mass production is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2010

LTPS employs laser crystallization technology to integrate the driver circuit onto the glass substrate. This leads to advantages in developing thin, light and compact applications, while its fast mobility and high aperture ratio enable high-resolution pictures.

The company’s new LTPS line will mainly produce high-end, small to medium sized displays for mobile products and target the mobile market including smartphones. The smartphone market is forecast to grow at an annual rate of approximately 30 percent, from 171 million units in 2008 to 366 million units in 2011, according to the market research firm Strategy Analytics.

Mr.Hyun He Ha, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Business Unit , noted at its ceremony, “With the new LTPS line, we plan to increase our competitiveness in the small to mid-sized mobile display market, in addition to our leading position in the large-sized LCD market. LG Display will maximize customer satisfaction through environmentally-friendly products like LTPS panels which deliver high quality and low power consumption.”

Meanwhile, the ceremony also marked the installation of equipments for the 3.5-generation AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) line. Investing approximately KRW90 billion, excluding building costs, the line is scheduled to start mass production of AM OLED panels for small mobile devices from its 730 x 460mm glass substrates in the first half of 2010. It is expected to achieve monthly capacity of 8,000 input sheets by the year’s end.
