LG Display signs cross licensing agreement on OLED with Kodak
2008-03-15
SEOUL, Korea ? March 15, 2008 ? LG. Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], one of the world’s leading TFT-LCD manufacturers, today announced it has signed a cross licensing agreement on OLED and related TFT technologies with Eastman Kodak Company. The two companies agreed to build a stronger win-win relationship to reinforce their competitive edge in OLED.
Under the agreement, the OLED technology* which Kodak holds patents of, enables LG Display to purchase Kodak’s proprietary OLED materials and utilize Kodak’s process technology, which should strengthen its OLED research, product development and manufacturing. On the other hand, Kodak should benefit from enhanced OLED R&D by gaining technical support in TFT substrate technology related to OLED from LG Display, which holds patents for core TFT technologies.
The two companies have continued to seek ways for cooperation since concluding an evaluation agreement in 2006. The cross licensing agreement is expected to solidify their leadership thanks to synergies produced by combining LG Display’s world-class TFT technologies and Kodak’s proprietary technologies for OLED.
Hyun He Ha, Executive Vice President and Head of Small & Medium Displays Business Unit at LG Display, said, “The agreement will help strengthen our small and medium size OLED business, and bolster our position in the large OLED market in the long run. We expect the win-win relationship to create vast synergy for the OLED business of both companies.”
Separately, LG Display will supply a 3.0-inch AMOLED panel jointly developed with Kodak to Japanese Kaga Electronics. The 3.0-inch QVGA panel will be used to produce a mobile TV set under the Kodak brand set to be launched in the Japanese market towards the end of March.
According to market research firm DisplaySearch, the worldwide OLED market is expected to grow rapidly, from an estimated $560 million in 2007 to $3.9 billion by 2011.
LG Display has been widely recognized for advances in next generation display technology. After developing a 20.1-inch wide AMOLED for TV in 2004, the company came up with the world’s first 4-inch flexible AMOLED in 2007.
