The Special Recognition Award annually recognizes members of the technical and scientific community, for distinguished and valued contributions to the information display field in terms of outstanding technical accomplishments, outstanding contributions to literature or outstanding service to the Society.

Dr. Chung has worked in the LCD industry for 17 years and will receive this award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of higher performing liquid crystal displays with sharper images and more uniform quality. These achievements are largely the result of his implementation of the world’s first copper bus line technology and reduction of the number of mask steps in the LCD fabrication process.

Dr. Chung joined LG.Philips LCD’s Research Center in Anyang, Korea, formerly known as LG Electronics’ LCD Research Center, in 1990 and developed both LCD panels and future TFT-LCD technologies. He later served as head of that center and the company’s research center in Gumi, Korea. Dr. Chung has been responsible for advancing the overall level of LCD technology and pushing LG.Philips LCD ahead of its competitors. His history at LG.Philips LCD and LG Electronics is the history of LCD technology.

Dr. Chung has been recognized as a global pioneer in developing LCD technology, having worked on a number of advancements that enhanced the high-definition, high-resolution capabilities of LCDs. Among the technologies he developed are the world’s first copper-based interconnect technology, the world’s first 3-mask technology, the word’s first EEFL backlight technology, the world’s first LED backlight LCD, the hybrid backlight LCD and scanning backlight technology. Moreover, he has guided R&D efforts to reduce costs and enhance productivity.

The SID 2007 Special Recognition Awards will be presented during the Awards Banquet on Monday, May 21 at 8 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. SID 2007 will be held from May 20 to 25 at the Long Beach Convention Center in California, U.S.A.
