The panel ruled that LG.Philips LCD holds exclusive ownership rights for its side-mounting patents, over which CPT filed for arbitration in July 2004.

LG.Philips LCD initially filed a patent suit against Taiwan-based CPT, alleging infringement of its side-mounting technology patents, in August 2002.

Though, CPT filed a countersuit in June 2004, claiming ownership of LG.Philips LCD’s patents, the arbitration panel recently denied all of CPT’s relief, ruling that LG.Philips LCD owned exclusive rights to its side-mounting patents. As a result, LG.Philips LCD maintains ownership of its numerous side-mounting technology patents and patent applications filed around the world.

Joo Sup Kim, Head of LG.Philips LCD Intellectual Property Center, said; “In addition to officially cementing LG.Philips LCD’s ownership of side-mounting technology patents, the ruling effectively ends any dispute on technology ownership rights. This dispute was interfering with our initial patent infringement lawsuit against CPT. ”

Separately, LG.Philips LCD filed patent infringement suits against CPT in federal court in California for infringement of its patents, including those for its side-mounting technology. That patent infringement case is scheduled for trial in October, 2006.

Side-mounting technology;
Side-mounting technology enables LCD modules to be attached to their cover using screws driven from the side, rather than from the front. This technology produces slimmer LCD modules, so it is widely used in the industry.
