LG.Philips LCD becomes First TFT-LCD Maker with Internationally Accredited RoHS Testing Laboratory
2006-06-29
This EU TUV SUD accreditation means that the RoHS testing performed at LG.Philips LCD’s in-house laboratory will have the same credibility and trustworthiness as tests performed by official authorized test centers.
Mr. Sang Deog Yeo, Executive Vice President for LG.Philips LCD Development Center, said, “Authorization as an internationally accredited testing laboratory will allow LG.Philips LCD to reduce costs associated with external testing, expedite the product accreditation process, and prevent the outflow of its core technologies.”
LG.Philips LCD established an Eco LCD Information System (ELIS), which ensures that the company has all of the information it needs in order to comply with environmental regulations in markets worldwide.
To further comply with environmental regulations, the company is operating a Green Purchasing System, which essentially blocks the use of hazardous materials at the purchasing stage. This system enabled the company to exclude the use of lead in all of its models in January, 2005, implement RoHS Verification Marking in June, 2006, and conduct environmental assessments on its products from the manufacturing stage up through the disposal stage.
LG.Philips LCD has constantly upgraded its facilities to minimize the environmental impact of its products. In 2004, the company launched an environmental analysis team at its R&D Center in Gumi, Korea. The company has also continued to invest in its testing laboratory and related technologies.
The RoHS directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment and will be implemented in the EU and Japan, beginning July 1. LG.Philips LCD will work proactively to meet and exceed the EU and Japan’s environmental directives and promote its stance as an environmentally conscious company by preemptively eliminating the use of substances likely to be included in the future.
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standards restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to be brought into the European Union district. The directive, which will take effect from July 1, 2006, limits the use of six substances: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
