LG.Philips LCD Holds Official Ceremony to Celebrate the Completion and Mass Production at its Seventh Generation Plant in Paju Display Cluster

As a completed facility, P7 is now producing LCD panels at an increasing capacity. Other facilities in Paju have been operational since the third and fourth quarters of 2005, including a module plant, a dormitory with accommodations for 4,000 people, a sewage disposal plant with a daily treatment capacity of 230,000 tons, and power supply facilities including a 345kV power substation. The company began mass production at P7 on January 1, 2006 and will eventually invest a total of KRW 5.3 trillion in this plant.
The plant is optimized to produce 42- and 47-inch LCD TV panels, using 1950 X 2250mm glass substrates. LG.Philips LCD expects P7’s monthly production capacity to reach 45,000 panels by June 2006 and 90,000 panels by the end of this year. The company believes this will solidify its position as a leading manufacturer in the LCD TV market. With a global market share for large-size LCD panels of more than 20% in 2005, according to the U.S.-based research firm DisplaySearch, LG.Philips LCD is one of the world’s leading LCD panel makers.
Approximately 1,000 guests, including high-ranking government officials such as President of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Moo-hyun Roh; Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy, Mr. Sye-Kyun Chung; Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development, Mr. Kyong-Ryung Seong and Governor of Gyeonggi Province, Mr. Hak-Kyu Sohn attended the ceremony. Other prominent guests included the Chairman of LG, Mr. Bon Moo Koo, and the Chairman of GS, Mr. Chang-Su Hur, along with LG.Philips LCD executives including Vice Chairman & CEO, Mr. Bon Joon Koo, and President & CFO, Mr. Ron H. Wirahadiraksa. LG.Philips LCD’s domestic and overseas partners and Paju City residents also attended the ceremony.
LG.Philips LCD Vice Chairman & CEO, Bon Joon Koo, said: “With P7, we are well positioned to meet the demand of the fast growing LCD TV market. The P7 plant will enable us to lead the standardization for LCD TV products such as 42- and 47-inch panels, further strengthening our leadership in the TFT LCD market.”
According to DisplaySearch, the LCD TV market is expected to continue its rapid growth, selling approximately 21 million units in 2005, 42 million units in 2006, 61 million units in 2007 and 111 million units in 2010. Also by 2010, LCD TVs will be the predominant TV technology, making up more than half of all TVs (52%) around the world.
