LG.Philips LCD Unleashes the Power of HDTV With the World's Largest TFT-LCD

2002-10-08

SEOUL, South Korea, Oct. 7 -- In a move sure to revolutionize the home entertainment display industry, LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., a leading innovator in thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, has unveiled the world's largest TFT-LCD for high-definition television (HDTV) applications. Topping its own largest-to-date 30-inch (30W) display by 40 percent, this breakthrough new TFT-LCD measures an impressive 42-inches (42W)-delivering superior resolution and the widest viewing angle on the market today, in a modern "wide" aspect ratio shape.

According to Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president of marketing for LG.Philips LCD, today's announcement is a major leap forward for the LCD TV industry, and demonstrates that large-scale LCD TVs are, in fact, here. "As the undisputed technology leader of TFT-LCDs for the desktop monitor market, we're committed to extending our leadership role to the burgeoning LCD TV industry, which affords tremendous opportunity for both consumers and manufacturers," said Berkoff. "The space savings, sleek and stylish form factors and amazing viewing capabilities enabled by this technology, compared to existing technologies such as CRTs and even plasma, will revolutionize today's home entertainment landscape and tomorrow's interior and furniture designs in ways we can barely imagine."

LG.Philips LCD's new 42-inch TFT-LCD offers a high resolution of wide XGA, and leverages the company's proprietary S-IPS (Super-In-Plane-Switching) technology. As a result, this first-of-its-kind display boasts an impressively wide viewing angle of more than 175 degrees, unparalleled brightness of 500 cd/m2, and a fast response time of 12ms -- delivering the bright, crisp images and fine detail essential for supporting digital broadcasting. In addition to its large screen size and slim form factor (50.9 mm in thickness), this new display also offers a high contrast ratio (500:1), ensuring a clear, crisp picture with low weight and low power consumption. This display is ideal for use in sleek, space-friendly wall-mounted LCD TVs.

With the addition of this cutting-edge 42-inch display solution to its portfolio, LG.Philips LCD is able to offer the industry's widest range of LCD TV display sizes -- from 15 to 42 inches (15 and 20.1-inch, 17W, 23W, 30W and 42W). As a result, the company is well positioned to realize its goal of capturing the lion's share of the TFT-LCD TV market by 2005.

According to a recent report from Austin, Texas-based DisplaySearch*, Sharp leads the LCD TV market with 48.4% market share, while LG.Philips LCD is close on Sharp's heels with a 35.5% share. Following are TM Display (Toshiba Matsushita) with 6.8%, and Samsung Electronics with a similar 6.8% share. The overall LCD TV market is expected to grow dramatically over the next four years -- increasing from 1.3 million units in 2002 to more than 16.1 million units by 2006*. This growth will further accelerate when digital broadcasting becomes more mainstream. (*Quarterly LCD TV Shipment and Forecast, Q3'02, DisplaySearch)

Volume production of the new, world's-largest TFT-LCD is slated to commence in the second half of 2003. LG.Philips LCD will demonstrate the 42-inch display at the Korea Electronics Show (KE Show) in Seoul from October 8-12, and at LCD/PDP International in Yokohama, Japan from October 30-November 1.
