LG.Philips LCD Leads Monitor Market to Record-Breacking Growth in 2001
2002-04-15
LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., a leading innovator of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today announced that it shipped more than 3.2 million thin film transistor (TFT)-LCDs for monitor applications in 2001, setting another record for this segment and a 148 percent increase from 2000 shipments. In addition, the company’s shipments in the 15-inch segment grew to over 2.7 million, compared to approximately 1.2 million in 2000.
According to Mass.-based market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) in PC Displays Year in Review (IDC Document #26620), 2001 was the fastest growing year for the LCD monitor market. LCD monitor shipments in 2001 totaled 15.5 million units, a 143 percent increase over 2000. In addition, the 15-inch monitor segment grew by 142.4 percent, with 2001 shipments totaling 12.4 million units. These growth rates signify the continued adoption and penetration of LCDs in the desktop monitor market, where CRTs had previously prevailed. In addition, as predicted by market analysts, this also signals the impending shift that LCD monitors will soon prevail over notebook computers within the next few years.
“2001 was indeed a banner year for the LCD monitor market,” noted Bob O’Donnell, IDC’s research director, device technology. “We saw extreme growth in established segments, such as the 15-inch monitors, as well as the continued adoption of larger 18-inch and 20-inch monitors.” LG.Philips LCD’s strong performance in supplying LCDs for the monitor market has played a key role in this growth year, and the company is well poised to extend this growth in 2002.
According to Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president of marketing for LG.Philips LCD, LCDs will remain a major and growing force in the monitor market, as more consumers realize the benefits of LCDs over CRTs. “We have been at the forefront of standardizing specifications for LCDs and are confident that we will be at the head of this market as the demand for LCD monitors exceeds that for notebooks in the next year or two and as LCD monitors overtake CRT monitors over the next few years. Marking our commitment to be a leader in this market, LG.Philips LCD was the first company within the display industry to introduce the 18.1-inch (SXGA), 20.1-inch (UXGA) and 22.0-inch (WSXGA) TFT-LCDs for the desktop monitor market, and are first again with a 23-inch WUXGA shipping in large quantities this year as well.” <BR
