LG.Philips LCD Leads TFT-LCD Monitor Market for Seventh Straight Quarter

2001-08-14

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, August 13, 2001 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today announced that for the seventh consecutive quarter the company has maintained its position as the industry’s leading supplier of thin film transistor (TFT)-LCDs for monitor applications. In addition, LG.Philips LCD ranked second in market share for the overall large-area (18-inches and above) TFT-LCD sector.

According to DisplaySearch’s (Austin, Texas) Q2 `01 Quarterly Large Area TFT-LCD Shipment Report, LG.Philips LCD enjoyed the highest growth rate among the world’s top ten TFT-LCD suppliers with 20.4 percent for the quarter, and 40 percent year-over-year growth for unit shipments. DisplaySearch also reports that LG.Philips LCD is expected to increase unit shipments by 59.1 percent on a sequential basis in Q2 `01, as well as expand its lead in the 15.x-inch monitor space with 64 percent unit shipment growth for the same period.

In addition, DisplaySearch also reports that total shipments for monitor applications reached 2.57 million units - marking a 16 percent increase over Q4 `00. Specifically, LG.Philips LCD witnessed a 30 percent increase in unit shipments during this same period. In addition, DisplaySearch states that the company’s LCD monitor module market share rose from 15.1 percent to 17.0 percent in Q1 `01, led by a 27 percent increase in 15.1-inch monitor module shipments. Moreover, LG.Philips LCD dominated the rapidly growing 15.x-inch monitor module market with a market share topping 19.7 percent. During Q1 `01, the company reclaimed the number two position in notebook modules, with a 13.4 percent increase in shipments, and experienced 80 percent sequential growth in the non-PC market. On a regional basis, Korea’s overall large-area TFT-LCD supplier market share increased from 37.8 percent to 38.2 percent, and is expected to reach over 40 percent by Q3 `01.

Commenting on the company’s success, Bruce Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD’s executive vice president of marketing, noted, "We are extremely excited to be ranked the fastest growing large-area TFT-LCD supplier this past quarter and look forward to additional opportunities in upcoming quarters. We believe our success can be attributed to a number of factors including our ability to deliver best-in-class display solutions, solid manufacturing prowess and our ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction."

LG.Philips LCD’s 15.1-inch TFT-LCD is the industry’s most preferred LCD monitor module. The advantage of a 15.1-inch TFT-LCD for use in desktop monitor applications is that its actual screen size is equivalent to that of a 17-inch CRT monitor, but consumes less power, has lower electro-magnetic emissions, is extremely lightweight and is significantly thinner (1/5 or less) than traditional CRT
