LG.Philips LCD Introduces Industry`s Thinnest And Lightest 20.1

2001-01-14

LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd. (CEO : Bon Joon Koo), one of the world''s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today unveiled a 20.1-inch LCD module for both digital/analog TV. This new product is the thinnest and lightest 20-inch LCD product on the market today, measuring only 20 mm (less than 0.8-inch) in thickness and weighing only 3.8 kilograms (8.4 lbs.), while delivering superior brightness capabilities of 500 nit.

Suitable for wall-mounted LCD TV applications, the viewable area of the 20.1-inch display is equivalent to that of a 23-inch CRT TV. The product, which is available for analog type broadcasting can also receive digital broadcasting, which many countries are working hard to make available by 2005. The ability to display dynamic images for both analog and digital applications is based on the 20.1-inch module''s extremely fast response speed.

Even though the LCD TV market is still in the infancy stage, analysts are predicting that there will be substantial demand and development for displays ranging from 15- to 20-inches by 2001. The market will then witness accelerated growth for 20-inch and larger models in 2002 and beyond.

LG.Philips LCD has already been involved in the mass-production of a wide range of models from 15.1-inch to 22-inch for use in monitors, DVD and entertainment systems applications, enabling it to be an early entrant in the emerging LCD TV market-a market that is expected to experience dynamic growth over the next three to six years. The introduction of the 20.1-inch module expands LG.Philips broad range of advanced display solutions for LCD TV.

Many vendors have announced new 680 mm x 880 mm manufacturing line, and high quality 20.1-inch screens can be made effectively in these production lines, so they are likely to become a standard product. LG.Philips LCD will begin manufacturing this new size module in its new Kumi, Korea factory, which is slated to begin full operation later this year. This new fab can produce, in volume, 29-inch LCD screens for large TVs-up to two per sheet of glass-allowing LG.Philips to take an early leadership position in the burgeoning LCD TV market through its volume production capacity strengths.
