LG.Philips LCD Unveils 13.3-Inch LCD For Mobile Computing Applications
2001-01-14
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, MAY 15, 2000 - LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., one of the world`s largest innovators of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, today introduced the latest in its family of notebook computer TFT-LCD modules - the LP133X8. Weighing in at only 390 grams and 5.2 mm thick this XGA-display is the lightest 13.3-inch TFT display module produced to date.
Last year, price restrictions surrounding 13-inch displays caused many PC makers to switch to larger sizes, but economic upturns and advances in technology are now once again fueling demand for these 13-inch displays. In fact, by the second half of 2000, analysts predict that 13.3-inch XGA displays will offer substantial cost benefits over 12.1-inch and 14.1-inch displays. As a result, an increasing number of LCD manufacturers are now expanding their production capacity for 13.3-inch LCD models, or plan to resume production of the 13.3-inch notebook PCs over the next few quarters, ultimately fueling the growth of the dynamic 13.3-inch LCD market.
Furthermore, many new 680 mm x 880 mm LCD manufacturing lines have been announced and as these come on-line in mid-2000 and early 2001, a new economical model in display sizes will emerge - differing greatly from last year`s industry - wide display shortage. Specifically, natural "sweet spots" exist in production for certain sizes such as 13.3-inch, 15.7-inch and 20.1-inch because manufacturers can easily produce nine, six, or four of these select sized modules (respectively) at these next-generation production lines on a single sheet of glass.
"The glass-use efficiency of a 13.3-inch XGA display is over 90 percent in most of these new fabs," noted, Bruce I. Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "When you couple this with LG.Philips LCD`s advanced side-mounting technology and glass etching capabilities, you get a very compelling reason to shift notebook usage from traditional 12- and 14- inch models, to 13- and 15-inch modules." Berkoff added that these new 13.3-inch displays can be as slim and light as traditional 12-inch displays - often with nearly the same price and form factor.
LG.Philips LCD`s 13.3-inch display affords tremendous price and glass efficiency advantages over existing 14.1-inch displays, while also delivering superior resolution capabilities and as lightweight as 12.1-inch displays.
LG.Philips LCD will be showcasing new 13.3-inch LCD model with its ultra-light weight and high resolution capabilities - two major consideration factors for notebook manufacturers - at the Society for Information Display symposium (SID 2000), held at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, Calif., from May 16 through May 18, 2000. This new display has XGA resolution (1024 x 768) previously reserved only for desktops. Many new notebook designs, and even internet appliances, will find it easy and compelling to use these new cost effective displays as the best combination of benefits for their users.
