To modernize home life, LG Display will be introducing its latest concept, ‘OLED Shelf,’ which combines two Transparent OLED displays, one above the other, and seamlessly blends into any living room decoration while adding a touch of elegance as it is hanging off from the shelf on the wall. The innovative OLED Shelf is perfect for displaying TV shows or gallery paintings while running in its Always on Display Mode, further demonstrating Transparent OLED displays’ ability to transform any home interior into a living space that exudes modernity.

Another innovation ready to make global headlines is the company’s ‘Virtual Ride’. The innovative Virtual Ride is an indoor stationary bicycle with three vertically-curved 55-inch OLED displays in front of and above it. The Virtual Ride demonstrates superior all-around flexible performance along with vivid, lifelike picture quality from the OLED screens that allow riders to carry out their favorite outdoor activity in the comfort of home.

Next up is the ‘Media Chair’ which combines a comfortable reclining chair with a curved Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) display. Leveraging CSO’s remarkable ability to emit sound from the display itself, the Media Chair unlocks a whole new experience that allows the user to relax while enjoying an immersive, theater-like experience at home.

Moreover, LG Display will be showcasing Gaming OLED displays. Its Gaming OLED range, which has already received high praise from the gaming community, flaunts a response time 10 times faster than conventional LCD counterparts without irritating ghosting effects, to allow the user to enjoy excellent image quality and an immersive gameplay to date. The company’s highly-touted Gaming OLED also provides an even higher level of eye comfort for long gaming sessions without the sore and fatigued eyes during and afterwards. LG Display will bring its 48-inch and 42-inch Gaming OLED displays to the market in 2022.

LG Display will be showing off its 17-inch Foldable OLED for laptops. The display is almost entirely crease-free at the point of folding, letting users enjoy one device in various ways and forms – from a tablet to a laptop to even a portable monitor. What’s more, the screen is also equipped with the company’s touchscreen solutions that enable people to use the screen with either a pen or one’s fingers depending on their preference or the task being undertaken.

‘IPS Black’, A High-End, Premium LCD Technology for IT products

For the first time ever, LG Display will introduce ‘IPS Black’, a high-end and premium LCD technology for IT products. The IPS Black displays boast a black level 35 percent deeper than existing IPS products, which enables extreme clarity and precise color accuracy, essential for professions where success lies in the details. What’s more, the IPS Black significantly lowers the level of blue light and flaunts a nearly-borderless design on all sides of the display that heightens immersion and looks great anywhere. LG Display will be introducing its IPS Black technology at CES 2022 through a 27-inch UHD monitor.

LG Display’s cutting-edge and innovative display products will be showcased through its virtual exhibition on CES official website only for its customers.

  • PR LG Display Unveils Next-Generation OLED TV Display ‘OLED EX’

SEOUL, Korea (Dec. 29, 2021) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, unveiled today its newest OLED TV technology ‘OLED EX’.

The next-generation OLED EX display implements LG Display’s deuterium and personalized algorithm-based ‘EX Technology,’ which helps boost the innovative display’s overall picture quality by enhancing brightness up to 30 percent compared to conventional OLED displays.

The OLED EX name is an acronym of ‘Evolution’ and ‘eXperience’, which represents the company’s goal of providing customers with new experiences through its ever-evolving OLED technology.

OLED displays are self-emissive by nature with their multiple millions of pixels emitting light independently without a separate backlight source. This distinctive characteristic lets OLED EX achieve the perfect black, rich and accurate color expression as well as an extremely fast response time.

Since 2013, the year it became the first to mass produce OLED TV displays, LG Display has been consistently improving its leading OLED technology. OLED EX is the result of the unparalleled knowledge and knowhow the company has gained over nearly ten years of developing OLED displays, created to deliver the most lifelike images that transcend the limitations of a conventional display.

The EX Technology applied to the OLED EX displays combines deuterium compounds and personalized algorithms to enhance the stability and efficiency of the organic light emitting diode, thereby improving the overall display performance.

Thanks to EX Technology, OLED EX displays unlock new levels of picture accuracy and brightness to accurately deliver exquisite, realistic details and colors without any distortion – such as the reflection of sunlight on a river or each individual vein of a tree leaf.

Deuterium compounds are used to make highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes that emit stronger light. LG Display has successfully converted the hydrogen elements present in organic light emitting elements into stable deuterium and managed to apply the compounds to OLED EX for the first time.

Deuterium is twice as heavy as normal Hydrogen, and only a small amount exists in the natural world – as only one atom of Deuterium is found in about 6,000 ordinary Hydrogen atoms. LG Display has worked out how to extract deuterium from water and apply it to organic light-emitting devices. When stabilized, the Deuterium compounds allow the display to emit brighter light while maintaining high efficiency for a long time.

In addition, thanks to LG Display’s very own 'personalized algorithm' based on machine learning technology, OLED EX is more in control of its own device. The algorithm predicts the usage amount of up to 33 million organic light-emitting diodes based on 8K OLED displays after learning individual viewing patterns, and precisely controls the display’s energy input to more accurately express the details and colors of the video content being played.

LG Display has also upgraded its designs through the new OLED EX technology. By utilizing its innovative EX Technology, the company reduced bezel thickness from the original 6 mm to 4 mm based on 65-inch OLED displays. By reducing the thickness by 30 percent compared to existing OLED displays, the OLED EX display creates an even more immersive viewing experience all the while delivering a sleeker and premium design.

LG Display plans to strengthen its leadership and product competitiveness in the large-sized OLED business by integrating OLED EX technology into all OLED TV displays manufactured at its OLED production plants in Paju, South Korea, and in Guangzhou, China, starting from the second quarter of 2022.

In 2013, LG Display’s first year of starting mass-production of OLED TV displays, the company sold 200,000 units and by early last year recorded accumulated sales of 10 million units. In the two years since then, the company’s accumulated sales have doubled to surpass 20 million units globally.

"Despite the global TV market experiencing a 12 percent decline this year, we still observed a 70 percent growth in OLED sales,” said Dr. Oh Chang-ho, Executive Vice President & Head of the TV Business Unit at LG Display. “With our new OLED EX technology, we aim to provide even more innovative, high-end customer experiences through the evolution of our OLED technology, algorithms and designs."

LG Display registered KRW 7,223 billion in revenues and KRW 529 billion in operating profit in the third quarter of 2021.

LG Display saw a year-on-year increase of 7% in revenues and a quarter-on-quarter increase of 4%, thanks to the increased shipments of its panels for IT products. The company’s year-on-year operating profit increased by 222%, however, its quarter-on-quarter operating profit decreased by 25% due to falling LCD TV panel prices, an increase in material costs due to the industry’s component shortage, and an increase in costs from the ramp-up of new facilities.

Panels for IT devices accounted for 45% of the revenues, panels for TVs accounted for 32%, and panels for mobile devices accounted for 23%.

LG Display’s large-sized OLED business continued to strengthen its position in the market as the premium TV sector continues to grow. In this regard, the company expects to achieve the annual sales goal of 8 million OLED panels and record annual profit this year. LG Display also saw stable results in the LCD business sector based on its differentiated high-end products and technology along with strengthened partnerships with strategic customers, as it shifted its LCD business structure to focus on the IT sector
    which helped minimize market fluctuation.

The panel shipments in the fourth quarter are expected to increase by mid-10% compared to the third quarter, with the delayed shipments affected by the industry’s component shortage predicted to return to normal. While the prices of LCD TV panels are expected to remain on a downward trend, ASP (Average Selling Prices) per square meter is expected to slightly rise thanks to an increase in shipments of mobile products with higher ASP.

"LG Display has successfully managed to build the stable business structure that helps it minimize market fluctuation while generating profits by pre-emptively shifting capacity toward competitive IT products and strengthening cooperative partnerships with strategic customers,” said Suh Dong-hee, CFO and Senior Vice President of LG Display. “Based on this, we will continue to generate profits through differentiated IT and Commercial products down the road.”

He also added, “The global TV market is actually showing signs of polarization due to the expansion of the high-end TV market, though it is seemingly getting smaller. It is predicted that OLED TV sales will continue to grow with the rise of high-quality content and consequently consumers’ increasing willingness to spend more on high performance TVs.”
