PR LG Display Rolls Out Privacy Protection LCD Panels for Notebook PCs2008-10-09 See detailsSeoul, Korea (Oct. 9, 2008) &?? LG Display Co., Ltd. [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220] ], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced today that it has developed a 14.1-inch LCD panel for notebook PCs that ensures privacy for users by allowing them to alter the viewing angle with a single touch. Mass production of the panel began this month.
The panel basically offers a 175 degree viewing angle. However, the viewing angle could be adjusted to 60 degrees thanks to Viewing &??angle Image Control Display (VIC) technology, preventing people sitting next to the user from seeing information on the screen.
The product features greater privacy when using Notebook PCs. Notebook PC users may carry out activities such as online banking in public places without fear of revealing personal information. Businesspeople may work on their Notebook PCs while traveling without having to worry about leaking confidential data.
Consumers who use separate privacy protection screens, costing $50~$100(USD), will no longer have to deal with reduced display brightness which occurs when the plastic screens are attached.
Additionally, they won’t have to bother removing the plastic screen when seeing the screen with other people.
“The 14.1-inch notebook PC LCD panel featuring VIC technology overcomes the limits posed by the earlier technology. It will pave the way toward commercialization of notebook PCs that block side viewing without any significant change in screen brightness with the simple touch of a button. LG Display will step up development of new technology and new products to provide customers and consumers with differentiated value. said Mr. In-Jae Chung, LG Display’s Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President.
In early September, LG Display began mass production of a notebook PC LCD panel featuring RGB LED backlight. The company has also introduced a product with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a dirt-resistant panel. LG Display will continue to lead the market by staying a step ahead of market needs.

PR LG Display teams up with leading LCD TV makers in China for “IPS camp”2008-09-22 See detailsLG Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of TFT-LCD technology announced that it signed an agreement with major LCD TV makers in Beijing, China, on September 19th to form an “IPS camp” for joint marketing in the Chinese market. The eight LCD TV companies that signed the agreement are Changhong, Haier, Hisense, Konka, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Philips and Skyworth.
The “IPS camp” participants intend to feature the “硬屛(Ying Ping)” logo, which represents IPS technology, in TV, newspaper and POP (point of purchase) ads and other promotional materials. They will also conduct training on the advantages of IPS technology for promoters at retail outlets and hold demonstrations at exhibitions and roadshows to promote the superiority of IPS technology to consumers.
Young Soo Kwon, President and CEO of LG Display said, “We decided to establish a joint venture with AmTRAN to provide differentiated value for our customers and consumers. We will reinforce our basic strengths through successful management of the joint venture and P8, which is scheduled to start mass production early next year.”
The joint marketing activities are expected to create a win-win effect for LG Display and “IPS camp” participants. The participating LCD TV makers, whose collective share of the Chinese TV market already exceeds 50%, are likely to further strengthen their market position. The LCD TV market in China is forecast to grow by an average 30% per annum and account for 18% of the worldwide LCD TV market by 2012 (about 33 million TV sets). (Source: DisplaySearch)
In his congratulatory message, LG Display CEO Young Soo Kwon said, “Along with product technology, marketing techniques should also evolve in order to deliver greater value to clients and consumers. I am confident that “IPS camp” will present a new model of successful joint marketing between panel makers and set companies.”
IPS (In-Plane Switching) Technology
Liquid crystal display (LCD) technology is classified into the three categories of TN, VA and IPS depending on the liquid crystal driving method. TN (Twisted Nematic) panels, the first to be commercialized, feature the simplest structure but viewing angles are limited. Efforts to overcome this drawback led to the development of IPS (In-Plane Switching) and VA (Vertical Alignment) technologies. In VA panels, the liquid crystals are vertically aligned. On the other hand, liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a horizontal direction in IPS panels, resulting in superior picture quality and viewing angle. IPS panels boast consistent color reproduction regardless of the viewing angle.

PR LG Display to Launch 17.1-inch RGB LED Backlight LCD for Notebook PC2008-09-18 See detailsSeoul, Korea (Sept. 19, 2008) ? LG Display Co., Ltd. [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced that it has begun mass production of the 17.1-inch LCD panels for Notebook PC with RGB LED backlight technology for the first time in the industry on September 16, 2008.
The RGB LED backlight technology uses LED(Light Emitting Diode) lamps that emit three primary colors of red, green and blue. The color reproduction rate of the LCD with RGB LED backlight reaches up to 105 percent, offering 40 percent more colors and 30 percent better contrast ratio than conventional CCFL models. In addition, the product is also strengthened with more eco-friendly properties, such as being mercury-free. Despite the superiority of the technology, RGB LED backlight technology has been commercialized only for LCD TVs and monitors until now, due to technical difficulties in mass production.
The mass production of RGB LED backlight LCD for notebook PC is expected to pave the way to speed up the spread of notebook PCs in professional computer graphics and PC game market segments.
“This panel is capable of high-definition display with natural colors, and overcomes the previous technical limitations. LG Display will continue to develop products that not only meet our customers’ needs but also exceed their expectations” said Man-Hyo Park, LG Display’s Vice President and Head of Notebook Product Development Department.
According to a market research firm DisplaySearch, LG Display took the top spot in the first half of 2008 LCD market share for notebook PCs, accounting for 30.2 percent of total global sales.

PR LG Display Announces a Joint Venture with AmTRAN2008-09-01 See detailsLG Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of TFT-LCD technology announced today that it has established a joint venture with AmTRAN Technology, a fast growing OEM/ODM LCD TV company in Taiwan, to better position itself in the LCD TV market.
LG Display and AmTRAN Technology signed an agreement to set up a joint venture that will produce LCD modules and EMS(electronic manufacturing system) based LCD TVs. The joint venture company, to be named Suzhou Raken Technology Ltd., will be set up in Suzhou, China, and funded with an investment of USD 20 million. LG Display and AmTRAN will each hold a 51% and 49% equity position in the new company. And the joint venture will be run on the spirit of full collaboration between both LG Display and AmTRAN
Under the agreement, an LCD module line will be newly constructed in AmTRAN’s existing TV plant in Suzhou. The plant is scheduled to produce 3 million LCD modules and 5 million LCD TV sets annually starting early next year.
The collaboration with AmTRAN is expected to help LG Display to expand its customer base by securing a stable, long-term source of demand for its panels. Moreover, the production of LCD modules and LCD TVs in a single location should lead to the use of fewer components through joint R&D and significantly lower packaging and logistics costs. The joint venture serves as a successful example of a win-win-win situation for panel supplier, OEM company, and brand TV maker.
