Development of eco-friendly products and expansion of certification

Eco-friendly products can have a positive effect on the environment by lowering the amount of resources and energy used in the product and reducing harmful substances, thereby adding new value to the product.
LG Display is expanding the production of eco-friendly products by considering various environmental factors from the initial stage of product development.

Eco-friendly Performance Index
for Products
(Eco Index)

LG Display introduced its own ‘Eco Index’ for the development of eco-friendly products. The company conducts self-evaluation from the product development stage and takes the lead in developing customer-oriented eco-friendly products by strengthening eco-friendly product standards for resources, energy, and hazardous substances through evaluation.

Eco-Index of 65-inch Display Products

A 65-inch display is an excellent example of applying the Eco Index to develop eco-friendly products.
A self-evaluation was conducted during the product development stage to identify areas that needed improvement. As a result, the recycling rate has been improved by replacing the types and ratios of raw materials used in products with materials that are easy to recycle.

Eco Label increases certification of eco-friendly products

In 2017, LG Display developed a certification program (Eco Label) for display modules for TVs in collaboration with SGS, a global certification testing organization, for the first time in the industry. This program examines the hazardous substance management system in the product development and production process, the recycling rate of products, and the use of hazardous substances. LDG has been certified for environmental excellence through this program by obtaining SGS Eco Label certification for the first OLED TV module in 2017 and acquiring certification for most models of OLED TV module in 2020. LG Display will continue to improve the eco-friendliness of displays by expanding to other products and other product groups.

Response to global environmental regulations

Response to global regulations through hazardous substance management process
(RoHS, REACH)

LG Display actively responds to EU laws prohibiting the use of hazardous substances and other domestic and international regulations that restrict the use of certain hazardous substances. For better management of hazardous substances, a total of four gates have been established and managed thoroughly, from the supplier registration to the mass production.

RoHS response
Process building

LG Display actively manages 10 RoHS* regulated substances. Especially, in order to preemptively respond to 4 new regulated substances (4 Phthalate**) in July 2019 in addition to the 6 existing regulated substances, LG Display developed a process to identify potential risk factors for each substance in advance and safely manage them. Also, LG Display established its own response strategy by identifying regulatory trends in advance through collaboration with external organizations, and derived and applied effective management measures through cooperation with development, procurement, and quality control departments.

Eco Analysis Team

LG Display's analysis team is responding to customers' environmental requirements in order to comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electronic products: The test standards required by international standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 and IEC 62321 have been recognized by KOLAS (Korean Accreditation Organization) since 2005 and TUV (German Standards Organization) since 2009 for heavy metals, flame retardants, and halogens.

Standardization of eco-friendly analysis technology

LG Display also actively participates in international RoHS analysis method standardization activities: LG Display took part in the revision work of IEC 62321, the RoHS international test standard, and proposed the combustion IC method, which is LG Display's halogen-free test method, as an IEC standard. In 2013, it was published as an official standard (standard name: IEC 62321-3-2).
